HOW WILL YOUR WORSHIP TODAY?

HOW WILL YOUR WORSHIP TODAY?

Today is the day we call the LORD'S DAY. It is a day when we gather together as a body of believers to celebrate who God is and rehearse His goodness. This morning in my Bible reading, I read again Psalm 100 from The Message:

Psalm 100

"On your feet now -- applaud God!
Bring your gift of laughter,
Sing yourself into his presence.

Know this: GOD IS GOD, and God, God.
He made us; We didn't make him.
We're his people, his well-tended sheep.

Enter with the password: "Thank you!"
Make yourselves at home, talking praise.
Thank him. Worship him.

For God is sheer beauty,
All-generous in love,
Loyal always and ever."

How will you worship today? Reflect on the words of this Psalm that many of you have committed to memory. Enjoy Him and his people today as you gather together to worship HIM -- He is the Audience of One!!!

A WEEK OF ENCOURAGEMENT

A WEEK OF ENCOURAGEMENT

This past week was one of intense struggle and discouragement for me. My staff can tell you that just before God is going to show up to do something incredible, we seem to go through all kinds of difficulties from equipment breakdowns to interpersonal relationship struggles. Little things seem to grow into big things.

Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were very difficult and by mid-afternoon on Tuesday, I have to confess, I was ready to throw in the towel. In fact, as I walked into the Colony Chapel for our weekly staff chapel, I looked at one of our staff who was aware of some of the stuff I was facing, and said, "I'm done!"

But God showed up at Chapel and did a mightily work in our midst, and from that point on, the rest of the week was one amazing victory after another. The conclusion of our Prophecy Week conference was an outpouring of God speaking to hearts and transforming lives.

Looking back now, today's verses from the WORD OF GOD as recorded in the daily devotional, DAILY LIGHT, have significant meaning for me. Maybe someone reading today's Freedom Fighter needs the reminder too:

"You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name. 'No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is from Me', says the Lord. The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who trusts in HIM! O, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him. The young lions lack and suffer hunger; but those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; yes, I have a good inheritance." (Psalm 61:1; Isaiah 54:17; Psalm 34:7-10; Psalm 16:6)

The Lord knows WHAT we need WHEN we need it. I pray that if you are discouraged today, under attack by the enemy, that your soul will be comforted by the encouragement from HIS WORD to you today.

I made an offer this week for your to secure the messages that were presented on Bible Prophecy by our speaker, Dr. Jimmy DeYoung. I would like to make them available to my Freedom Fighter friends -- 8 messages which includes a Q & A. This is a must-hear series for every Christian. I'd be happy to send them to you and ask that you consider a special gift for the ministry of America's KESWICK. You can make a donation right from our website: www.americaskeswick.org. MORE NUGGETS FROM A FRIEND'S BIBLE

MORE NUGGETS FROM A FRIEND'S BIBLE

Yesterday I shared that dear friend in her nineties, gave me her Bible. It contains so many precious notes, poems and outlines that she has written throughout her life. She loves the Book, and yet because of her loss of vision, cannot read it. She holds onto the Word that she has memorized over the years.

Here is a precious poem I found on one of the inner pages of her Bible:

O Jesus Christ, grow Thou in me,
And all things else recede!
My heart be daily nearer Thee,
From sin to be daily freed.

Each day let Thy supporting might,
My weakness still embrace,
My darkness vanish in Thy light
Thy life my death efface.

In Thy bright beams which on me fall,
Fade every evil thought,
That I am NOTHING, Thou are ALL,
I would be daily taught.

More of Thy glory let me see,
Thou, Holy, Wise, and True!
I would Thy living image be,
In joy and sorrow, too.

Fill me with gladness from above,
Hold me by strength Divine.
Lord, let the glow of Thy great love
Through my whole being shine.

Make this poor self grow less and less
Be Thou my life and aim;
Oh, make me daily thru Thy grace
More meet to bear Thy name.

What a wonderful prayer for today!

I want to offer once again to send my Freedom Fighter friends a set of the messages that Dr. Jimmy De Young has presented at America's KESWICK this week on Bible prophecy. It is a timely series in light of all that is taking place right now in the Middle East. We ask that you consider a special summer gift to help us with our summer conference expenses. Respond to this email to let me know you want the CD's and be sure to include your mailing address. If you'd like to make your gift on-line, you can do so right from our home page: www.americaskeswick.org. Mark your gift "Prophecy Series." Your help at this time will be greatly appreciated.

God bless.

DEPEND ON GOD

DEPEND ON GOD

From the writings of FENELON -- THE SEEKING HEART

"I know I talk a lot about being totally detached from yourself and about loving in a completely unselfish way. Since this is such a difficult thing to do, I don't want you to feel so guilty when you fall short. Your failures don't make you displeasing to Him. It is a long process toward being completely dead to your selfishness. There will be self-seeking in many things that you do. You can tell if your old self is involved in a situation when something stands in the way of what you want and your are upset or disgruntled.

You cling to yourself without realizing it, but see how you cry when something is taken away! You do not deliberately hang onto your bad intentions, but you do not look at them too closely for fear of what you might find out! God reveals a thousand things in your heart which you will swear are not there, but He will help you to deal with them.

Do you think you want to discover all your weaknesses at once? God tenderly spares you this frightening discovery. He does not send too much light too quickly. Do you see how admirable and good God is not to ask you to change something which He has not given you the resources to change?

The people who watch their faults the most are still in the dark about how to give up certain weaknesses. God reserves this wisdom for a more advanced state.

Be faithful to what God has given you -- not what He hasn't. God will show you, in HIS time, everything you need to know. Meanwhile, God hides your own imperfections behind a veil lest they overwhelm you. You impatiently want to be perfect, but it is much better to wait humbly under the hand of God. Bear yourself without condemnation or flattery. The process will work a deeper death to your self-nature than instant perfection.

God wants to foster your dependence on Him. He gives you light as a wise mother would give her child tasks to do. No more light is given until that particular job is finished. Have you finished all that God sets before you? He will instantly give you a new work for He never leaves you idle. But if you haven't done what He has asked, He will show you more.

Let God work in you, and be happy with the light He gives you. Each new gift from God is built upon the one before it." Written over 400 years ago!!! Good words for today.

"Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way." Psalm 139:23

Join us this week for uplifting and challenging messages by one of America's leading scholars on Biblical prophecy. Dr. Jimmy DeYoung will be speaking each morning (M-T) at 9:30 AM and then in the evenings at 7 PM. Call for information -- 732-350-1187.

A MEETING WITH GOD

A MEETING WITH GOD

"Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day." (Genesis 32:24)

Jacob is a perfect example of a man who strives to do the will of God in his own strength and intellect. Jacob rose to great heights and acquired wealth by his human abilities, but in all of his success he was far from being in the will of God.
We are first introduced to Jacob in Genesis 25. At the time of his birth we see two things. First, God informed Rebekah that the struggle she felt in her womb was because she was carrying twins. God promised that the blessings of the birthright, always given to the first born, would be given to the second born. Secondly, Jacob's nature is revealed in the birth process as he holds to the heel of his twin brother Esau.
In time Jacob convinced Esau to sell his birthright as the first born for a bowl of stew (Genesis 25:29-34). Later he lied to his father Isaac and tricked him into bestowing to him the birthright (Genesis 27:18-29). From the time Jacob lied to Isaac until we see him wrestling with the Lord in Genesis 32, over twenty years elapse. Jacob's entire life was one of deceit and deception. The tragedy of his life was that God had promised to give everything to Jacob that he was lying and cheating to get. If only Jacob had waited on God how different his life would have been.
Jacob's actions eventually backed him into a corner at Jabbok. It was here that God arranged a long overdue meeting with Jacob. This meeting with God would be the turning point in Jacob's life.
Genesis 32: 22-32 describes the nature of this meeting. First, Jacob was left alone. God requests that we spend time alone with Him, but if we refuse or neglect to keep this appointment God will arrange an appointment of His own. He knows the value of His children spending time alone with Him. Are you spending time alone with God?
At Jabbok God broke Jacob. It was out of this brokenness that Jacob saw himself for he was and he confessed all his sin. It was in this state of brokenness that God changed Jacob and blessed him with a new name and a new nature.
Are you spending time alone with God?

THE FEAR OF THE LORD (Part 2)

THE FEAR OF THE LORD (Part 2)

I have read many definitions of the fear of the Lord but the one the has helped me the most is one that Bill Gothard shared at his seminars: "The fear of the Lord is the continual awareness that God weighs, sees and knows every one of my thoughts, deeds, words and actions."

We like to focus on the love of God and I am thankful for His everlasting, unconditional, and unfailing love. But there is the other side of God -- His holiness, His justice, His righteousness that needs to be realized.

Most of us have heard the fear of the Lord defined as reverence for God. The word reverence means to treat with awe and respect. Dr. Ed Welch in his book WHEN PEOPLE ARE BIG GOD IS SMALL says that on one side of the fear of the Lord there is terror, dread, and trembling as we consider who God is. In this side of the fear of the Lord we want to hide from Him because we fear Him. Yet the more I come to know Him and love Him, it leads to astonishment, awe, reverence, devotion, trust and worship of Him -- We seek, draw near and submit to God.

Growing up I can remember having my Mom say when I was naughty, "Just wait till your father gets home." There was dread and trembling because of the discipline that I knew was coming. I respected my Dad and yet when I knew that I would face discipline from him, I wanted to run and hide. And yet there was in that respect for him, the desire to be in his presence ... something that created in me a desire to be near him and a desire to submit to his authority.

John Bunyan, author or PILGRIM'S PROGRESS wrote: "Christian, let God's distinguishing love to you be a motive to you to fear Him greatly. He has put His fear in your heart, and may not have given that blessing to your neighbor, perhaps not to your husband, your wife, your child, or your parent. Oh, what an obligation should this thought lay upon your heart to greatly fear the Lord! Remember also that this fear of the Lord is His treasure, a choice jewel, given only to favorites, and to those who are greatly beloved."
Tomorrow I want to share with you the benefits of fearing the Lord.
Have a great day!!!

Next week Dr. Jimmy DeYoung will be on campus at America's KESWICK for our prophecy week. Sessions will be Monday - Thursday mornings at 9:30 AM and the Monday - Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM. With all that is going on in the Middle East, you don't want to miss this great week. For further information, call 732-350-1187.

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

One of the phrases that is repeated often in the book of Proverbs is "the fear of the Lord." I have been preparing for a message that I will share this morning, and it has been an interesting study (just scratching the surface) on understanding the concept of what it means to fear the Lord.

Bill Gothard says: "The fear of the Lord is the continual awareness that God knows, weighs and sees, every one of my thoughts, deeds, words and actions."

That is a pretty powerful definition. As I did a phrase search through the Scriptures, I learned several principles about "the fear of the Lord" that I would like to share with you over the next couple of days.

The fear of the Lord is a concept that was to be taught by fathers to their children. There is a huge market right now in a series of books on a variety of topics from auto repairs to developing a strategic plan. You've probably seen the series ... "Auto Repairs for Dummies" and the list goes on.

Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs, not for dummies, but so that we would have an instruction manual for life. For dads in particular, this is a great training manual for teaching our kids and grandchildren on how to fear the Lord.

There are three ways that we can teach this life-changing concept:

1. Instruction. The Word of God is such a powerful tool in our lives. That is why it is so important that we spend time in it every day. Not just reading it, but meditating on it and memorizing it. Most of us have experienced the pain of trying to put something together without reading the instruction manual. We get to the end of the project and there are three or four pieces left over! We end up having to start over. We could have saved ourselves time, energy and frustration, if we had just taken the time to read the manual.

2. Example. My grandson Tanner is very inquisitive. He constantly asks, "What's that?" which is helping him learn much about life. One of my favorite vacation spots is Disney World (don't send me letters, please). I enjoy visiting there for many reasons, but one of the things I like to do is observe what they do, how they do it, and why they do it. They have worked hard at serving people, and since I am serving in that field, I can learn much by their example. I have a copy of their "training manual" which is over 1000 pages. The easiest way for me to learn is by example. The Scriptures contain many biographies of men who feared the Lord. They weren't perfect, but we can learn from their examples. You can also read biographies of great men like D. L. Moody, Jonathan Edwards, George Mueller, etc., to learn how they lived their lives.

3. Application. All the knowledge in the world doesn't mean a thing if we don't apply it. I have come back from a trip to Disney with lists of things I have learned. If I don't do anything but file the information in the folder, there was really no value in taking the time to observe and learn. I have just gathered useless information. The value in observing and learning is taking the information and using it in my world.

All that to say, over the next couple of days, I want to give you some observations about the fear of the Lord that I am learning so that together we can apply the principles to our lives. Hopefully you will use what we learn to teach your kids and grandkids. And the principles work in every area of life.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." Proverbs 9:10

A PRAYER OF THE PURITANS FOR THE LORD'S DAY

A PRAYER OF THE PURITANS FOR THE LORD'S DAY

O Lord, my Lord,
This is your day,
The heavenly ordinance of rest,
The open door of worship,
The record of Jesus' resurrection,
The seal of the sabbath to come,
The day when saints militant and triumphant unite in endless song.
I bless you for the throne of grace,
that here free favor reigns;
that open access to it is through the blood of Jesus;
that the veil is torn aside and I can enter the holiest
and find you ready to hear,
waiting to be gracious,
inviting me to pour out my needs,
encouraging my desires,
promising to give more than I ask or think.
But while I bless you, shame and confusion are mine:
I remember my past misuse of sacred things,
my irreverent worship,
my base ingratitude,
my cold, dull praise.
Sprinkle all my past sabbath with the cleansing blood of Jesus,
and may this day witness deep improvement in me.
Give me in rich abundance the blessings the Lord's Day was designed to impart;
May my heart be fast bound against worldly thoughts or cares;
Flood my mind with peace beyond understanding;
may my meditations be sweet,
my acts of worship, life, liberty, joy,
my drink the streams that flow from your throne,
my food the precious Word,
my defense the shield of faith,
and may my heart be more knit to Jesus.

From THE VALLEY OF VISION -- Prayers of the Puritans

Great quote: When we worship the Lord, let's remember that He is in control. Nothing alarms Him, or takes Him by surprise. Nothing is too big for Him to handle, or so small it escapes His attention. When the winds of my world begin to blow, He remains seated. When raging waves surround me, He governs their temper...I need not be moved ... Because the Lord is seated and sovereign...He alone is sovereign.

PERSPECTIVE

PERSPECTIVE

Things are heating up in the Middle East today and many are concerned the that events unfolding before our very eyes could have ramifications that could trigger a major world. Are these events signs of the times in God's prophetic timetable?

I believe that they are. But I also want to give your another perspective to think about today. Christians love Israel because we know how God feels about Israel. Over the years we have been admonished to "pray for the peace of Jerusalem." We need to be praying for the Jewish people, first of all, that they will come to know MESSIAH in a personal way.

Several years ago, I had the privilege of meeting a man from our church who has served in Jordan for over 30 years. Dr. George Kelsey has helped many of us to see a different perspective that often goes unnoticed. Despite the tensions and factions in the Middle East, God has been working in the hearts of my Arabic and Muslim people. Because of the persecution that they would face for openly talking about their faith, the life transformations going on in these countries often goes unnoticed. But the reality is that there are many Jordanians, Egyptian and Lebanese believers that are growing in their walk with the Lord.

We have several friends right now who have significant ministries in Lebanon. Despite the fact that their families have ostracized them because of their faith in Christ, they continue to serve the Lord and share Christ with their people.

While we are encouraged to pray for our Jewish friends, I want to encourage you pray for the Christians in these Arabic nations. They are the ones that are going to be affected by the current events taking place in the Middle East. While we pray that the Jewish people will come to trust Messiah, let's not forget to pray for the salvation of people in other Middle Eastern nations for whom Christ died.

Hope that helps to give you a fresh perspective. Dr. Jimmy DeYoung, a scholar on the Middle East and End-time events, will be our prophecy week speaker, July 23-28. Call today for times and information. 800-453-7942.

CATCH 'EM DOING SOMETHING RIGHT

CATCH 'EM DOING SOMETHING RIGHT

I do a lot of reading throughout the year and a good portion of the books I read are written on leadership. As a leader of a major Christian ministry, I want to hone my skills and be the most effective leader than God wants me to be.

One of the things that has struck me the past few days is how many books are written with themes that supposedly are new revelations. Concepts and principles are put in writing and the next thing you know -- you have a best seller. The more I study leadership, the more I realize that what the "gurus" are telling us come right from the Scriptures . . . They just don't know it or haven't quite figured out that God has the market on leadership principles.

Recently I read Ken Blanchard's book, HIGH FIVE TEAMS. One of the principles of the book is to catch your staff doing something right. People tend to repeat behaviors that are rewarded positively. He encourages us to take the time to watch and observe the people we work with, can reward them with praise when we catch them doing something right. Positive reinforcement will produce men and women who will continue to do the right things.

I challenged my staff to do this and we are giving a $10 cash gift to the person who is caught doing something right during the month of July. My hope is that rather than people looking for blunders and mistakes, we will create an atmosphere of encouragement that will result in greater team unity and a greater understanding of why we do what we do.

The writer to the book of Hebrews said: "Let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works." (Hebrews 10:24). Ken Blanchard thought he discovered a new principle! It's been in the Bible for a long time. The context of this verse is in relation to the church ... and wouldn't it be great if we put that into practice. Think about how the church would grow if we took up the challenge. But we can also apply that in the world where we work as well as in our families.

How can you this weekend stir up love and good works in the lives of your spouse and kids? How can you do that in your church? Rather than looking for something someone did that was wrong -- how about "CATCHING 'EM DOING SOMETHING RIGHT!"

Let me know how it goes!

PRIORITIES

PRIORITIES

Depending on how God has wired you, you may be the kind of man who sets goals and has a plan for your life. Some of us set goals during the last days of the year as we think through the year looming before us. Some of us are disciplined enough that we have check points throughout the year to see where we are in terms of meeting and reaching our goals, and depending on the outcomes, make mid-course corrections so that we stay on track.

For many of us, life is like a treadmill that has been stuck on a fast speed and somehow we cannot get the control bottom to slow down. We constantly running and never quite able to catch up. When I first started in ministry at America's KESWICK, I realized that every day was going to be an adventure. And you know what, over a month in my tenth year, it is still true. I cannot say that any day has been "boring." There are some days that I find myself saying, "It would be nice to get to the end of the day and say, 'I was bored.'"

With all that is going on in our lives, how do we stay focused? How do we keep from losing control and the perspective we need to stay on track? One of the ways is too established priorities in our lives. For many years I heard that my priorities should be God first, family second, and then work/ministry. Quite honestly, while that sounds good, it isn't always to follow.

Oswald Chambers helped clarify priorities for me several years ago and I have turned down the corned of the page on the July 13th reading as each year when I read this devotional, it becomes for me my mid-year course correction:

"Your priorities must be God first, God second, and God third, until your life is continually face to face with God and no one else is taken into account whatsoever. Your prayer will then be, 'In all the world there is no one but You, dear God; there is no one by You."

If we are really honest with ourselves, usually the first priority on our list seems to take the backseat. We get caught up in the stuff of life and our time with God gets put on the backburner. Yeah, we want to do it, but we oversleep or we get a late start. So we say, "I'll do it later . . ." and later never comes.

Several years ago I was really stressed and came home from work to find that Zach wanted my undivided attention as soon as I walked in the door. I had a long day and had spent considerable time dealing with people issues. I really wanted some space to debrief and pull myself together. To my shame, I was very short with him and in a snippy voice said, "Can't you give me twenty minutes of quiet so I can get my thoughts together?" Deflated, he left the room. Ten minutes later, the phone rang and it was a staff member asking me if I could meet with a man from the Colony who was in distress. I told Jan that I had to go and meet with him and an hour later returned to a very icy house. I could tell as soon as I walked in the door that I had stepped into a freezer.

Jan made this remark that whacked me on the side of the head: "We are tired of getting the leftovers!" Well, my friend, as you think about the priorities of your life, I want to suggest that God doesn't want the leftovers! He needs to become our number 1#, number #2, and number #3 priority. And you know what I am discovering? When that happens all the other issues of life begin to fall into proper place, and life, even though it may feel like a treadmill, is easier to handle.

What are your priorities today? Maybe today is the day to make a mid-course correction in your life.

FEAR NOT

FEAR NOT

"My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest. Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, HE is the one who goes WITH you. He will not leave you or forsake you. The Lord, HE IS the one who goes BEFORE you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord Your God is with you wherever you go. In ALL your ways acknowledge Him, and HE shall direct your paths. He HIMSELF has said, 'I will never leave you or forsake you.' So we may BOLDLY say: 'The Lord IS my helper; I WILL NOT FEAR." (Exodus 33:14; Deut. 31:6,8; Joshua 1:9; Proverbs 3:6; Hebrews 13:5-6)

I was reminded this morning in my quiet time that "fear is a powerful controller. It either compels is to do what is IRRESPONSIBLE or it impedes us from living RESPONSIBLY . . . The most frequent command of Jesus in the Gospels is, 'FEAR NOT.' In anticipation of Israel's entrance into the Promised Land, God tells His people four times, 'BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS' (Joshua 1). The writer of Proverbs says, 'The wicked flee when NO ONE is pursuing, but the righteous are bold as a lion.' (Proverbs 28:1).

The fact that God doesn't look favorably on cowards and unbelievers is made evident in Revelation 21:8: "But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.' Does it surprise you that cowardly, unbelieving people are listed in the rogue's gallery with murderers and liars?

It is characteristic of the Spirit-filled life to be BOLD ("When they gathered, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak the Word of God with BOLDNESS." Acts 4:31) The early church did not pray for 'divine appointments,'; they prayed for BOLDNESS. God's kingdom can only be established by faithful courageous people." Adapted from Neil T. Anderson's reading for July 12th from DAILY IN CHRIST -- A DEVOTIONAL

Is there an area in your life were you are fearful today? Listen to these words and apply them to your heart: FEAR NOT!

HOW HUNGRY AND THIRSTY ARE YOU THIS MORNING?

HOW HUNGRY AND THIRSTY ARE YOU THIS MORNING?

Advertisers have been using subliminal advertising techniques for years to cause people to go out and buy their products. When I was working on the staff at Sandy Cove, one of our staff members would head to the vending machine room right before a big group check-in and put a bag a popcorn in the microwave. The smell would soon waft its way into the lobby and before you knew it, people were heading to the vending machine room to buy a bag of popcorn.

Since I struggle in the area of food, just the thoughts of certain foods can make be hungry. The more I think about it -- hmmmm -- what food does that for you? A crispy cream donut? A gelati at Rita's? A steak at Charlie Browns? Right now a good donut and a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee are causing my stomach to rumble.

The real question this morning is are you hungry and thirsty for the only ONE that can satisfy the hunger and thirst of your soul? Those hunger and thirst pangs are there and we so try to fill them with other stuff rather than run to the only ONE who can take care of the longing of our soul. Listen to some verses of Scripture that were a part of my daily quiet time this morning:

HE satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness. You have TASTED that the LORD is gracious. O God, You are my God; eagerly will I seek You; my soul THIRSTS for YOU; my flesh LONGS for YOU in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. So I have looked for YOU in the sanctuary, to see YOUR power and YOUR glory. My soul LONGS for YOU, yes even FAINTS for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the LIVING GOD. (Psalm 107:9; 1 Peter 2:3; Psalm 63:1-2; Psalm 84:2).

My friend, HE IS THE ONE who can quench the thirst of your soul. HE IS THE ONE who can satisfy the hunger in your heart. Thousands of men are using internet porn to fill their hungry souls. Others use drugs and alcohol. Allow HIM to fill you today. Get in the Word this morning and allow Him to fill you with HIS presence. You will be filled and satisfied, desiring more and more of HIM -- and He is carb and calorie free!!!

Good words for you to consider today. God bless.

GROW IN GRACE

GROW IN GRACE

Grandparenting and gardening have a lot in common. Last week I had an opportunity to spend a couple of hours with my grandson, Tanner, and my granddaughter, Lindsay. It has only been a few weeks since I have seen them, but I was amazed and how much they have grown. Tanner's vocabulary has increased and his little brain is going a mile a minute. And Lindsay, just born several weeks ago, has already grown and changed in appearance.

Our daughter Julie is expecting in September with our third grandchild, and we have had the fun of watching Emma grow and seeing her growth through ultra-sound pictures. Growth is important in the development of our kids.

I have enjoyed gardening more and more each year (I'm getting old!) and this year we expanded our garden. I don't really know where my head was, but we put in over 18 tomato plants. The area that we are using for our garden is our old chicken yard. Last year the chicken were running around and, well let's just say, that chicken droppings makes the best fertilizer. At the end of our garden last summer, Zach and I tossed the rotten tomatoes into the old chicken yard as they love vegetables. So guess what -- we have 10 or 12 additional tomato plants that I didn't plant.

In mid-June we went to Minnesota for a visit and before I left, I used Miracle Gro on my garden plants. During our time away, one of our maintenance guys who cares for our grounds, decided that he should put stuff on my plants to help them grow. The result? Tomatoes on steroids. I have plants that are taller than me with very thick stems and they are loaded with tomatoes.

Like babies and tomatoes, we should be growing in our walk with the Lord. Peter prayed that we would "grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 3:18). One of the ways we grow is to be fertilized with the WORD OF GOD. That's why it is so important for you to spend time each day in God's WORD.
The MIRACLE GRO of God's WORD will help you grow and mature into the man that God wants you to be. As my good friend, Dr. John DeBrine, host of the daily radio program SONGTIME says, "If we don't grow, we will groan!"

Are you growing in your spiritual life? If not, purpose today to get into the Word and allow it to fertilize your life.

We all have met them. People who claim that they don't believe that God even exists. How do we reach them? Dr. Ron Rhodes shares how we can effectively reach atheists and agnostics on this weeks KESWICK TODAY broadcasts. Listen in right from our website: www.americaskeswick.org.

MAINTAINING YOUR FREEDOM

MAINTAINING YOUR FREEDOM

"It was for FREEDOM that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1)

"The Revolutionary War was a hard-fought battle, and many lives were lost in order to ensure the freedom of our country. There is always a price to pay for freedom, and the moment we take our freedom for granted, we run the risk of losing it.

Freedom in Christ from our sinful nature and the god of this world is the inheritance of every believer. Christ has set you free through His victory over sin and death on the cross. But if you have lost a measure of your freedom because you have failed to stand firm in the faith or you have disobeyed God, it is your responsibility to do whatever is necessary to maintain a right relationship with God. Your ETERNAL DESTINY is not at stake; you are secure in Christ. But your DAILY VICTORY in Him will be tenuous at best if you fail to assume your responsibility to maintain your freedom in Christ.

Remember: You are not the helpless victim of a tug-of-war between two nearly equal superpowers. Compared to Satan's LIMITED attributes, God is IMMEASURABLE in His omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience -- and you are united with Him! Sometimes the reality of sin and the presence of evil may seem more real than the reality and presence of God, but that's part of Satan's DECEPTION. HE IS A DEFEATED FOE, and we are in Christ the eternal VICTOR. That's why we worship God; to keep His divine attributes constantly before us in order to counter Satan's lies. A true knowledge of God and our identity in Christ is the greatest determinant of our mental health. A false concept of God and the misplaced deification of Satan are the greatest contributors to mental illness. Are you walking in freedom today? -- from Neil Anderson's writings, DAILY IN CHRIST--A DAILY DEVOTIONAL.

There is a story told that during the Civil War when freedom from slavery was secured that many slaves continued to suffer oppression and bondage because they didn't know that they had been freed! That's the way many of us are living. My friend -- CHRIST HAS SET YOU FREE FROM THE BONDAGE TO SIN! Now live like a free man!

Have a great Lord's Day.

GRACE ... IT'S AMAZING

GRACE ... IT'S AMAZING

We talk about it. We sing about it. But do we really comprehend it? The word is used 150 times in the New Testament so it must be important. Here are ten amazing realities of grace that Richard Blackaby, shares in his new book, PUTTING A FACE ON GRACE ... LIVING A LIFE WORTH PASSING ON:

1. Grace is a gift of kindness given to someone who does not deserve it.
2. Grace is not reciprocal. It goes one way.
3. Grace is costly. Someone has to pay for grace.
4. Grace looks at what people CAN become and seeks to help them reach their potential. Grace does not condemn those who have not yet arrived.
5. Grace focuses on SOLUTIONS, not problems.
6. Grace leads to action.
7. Grace is what motivates God to relate to us moment by moment with perfect love. God looks at us through eyes of grace. If He didn't, we wouldn't have no hope.
8. Grace is the lubricant that eases friction in any relationship.
9. Grace expects the best but offers freedom to fail.
10. Grace celebrates success and does not keep score of wrong things.

The songwriter expressed it this way:

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Greater than all my sin;
How shall my tongue describe it,
Where shall its praise begin?
Taking away my burden,
Setting my spirit free,
For the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus,
Deeper than the mighty rolling sea;
Higher than the mountain, sparkling like a fountain,
All sufficient grace for even me!
Broader than the scope of my transgressions,
Greater far than ALL my sin and shame!
O magnify the precious name of Jesus,
PRAISE HIS NAME!

Good truth to ponder throughout today as we prepare our hearts to gather with the body of Christ to worship corporately on the Lord's day.

DON'T WORRY

DON'T WORRY

I have shared with you on numerous occasions that I have struggled at times with worry! I come from a long line of worriers. My grandmother thought that worry was a spiritual gift and she possessed it.

The past several days have been stressful for us, as our kids have moved from Minnesota to New Hampshire and Jan (my wife) flew out to help them with the long drive. There were lots of crazy things going on, and each day seemed to bring more and more stress. The more stress resulted in more fatigue, and with the fatigue, the old monster of worry came in like a flood.

One of the amazing aspects of a daily devotional life is how the Spirit of God knows what we need and when we need it. On the morning when the "worry monster" seemed to be hanging over my head, this was the reading for the day from my friend, Oswald Chambers (If you haven't figured it out -- Chambers is one of my favorite guys!):

"Do not fret -- it only causes harm!" -- Psalm 37:8

"Fretting mean getting ourselves "out of joint" mentally or spiritually. It is one thing to say, 'Do not fret,' but something very different to have such a nature that you find yourself unable to fret. It is easy to say, 'Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him' (37:7) until our own little world is turned upside down and we are forced to live in confusion and agony like so many other people.

Is it possible to 'rest in the Lord' then? This 'Do Not' must work during our days of difficulty and uncertainty, as well as our peaceful days, or it will never work. And if it will not work in your particular case, it will not work for anyone else. Resting in the Lord is not dependent on your external circumstances at all, but on your relationship with God Himself.

Worry always results in sin. We tend to think that a little anxiety and worry are simply an indication of how wise we really are, yet it is actually a much better indication of just how wicked we are. Fretting rises from our determination to have our own way. Our Lord never worries and was never anxious, because His purpose was never to accomplish His own plans but to fulfill God's plans. Fretting is wickedness for a child of God.

Have you been propping up that foolish soul of yours with the idea that your circumstances are too much for God to handle? Set all your opinions and speculations aside and 'abide under the shadow of the Almighty.' (Psalm 91:1). Deliberately tell God that you will not fret about whatever concerns you. All our fretting and worrying is caused by planning without God." from My Utmost for His Highest

Well, God spoke to my heart! I needed that message. Thank You, Lord, that YOU KNOW exactly what your kids need.

Maybe this is something YOU NEED today. I trust it will bless and encourage your heart. Don't worry!

SECRET SINS AND MY PRAYER LIFE

SECRET SINS AND MY PRAYER LIFE

"All Christians have their secret sins. Psalm 19:12: 'Who can understand
his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults." O friends! Who can
reckon up the secret imaginations, the secret inclinations, or the
secret pride, the secret blasphemies, the secret hypocrites, the secret
murmurings, the secret filthiness, the secret discontentment's, the
secret unbelievings that God might every day charge upon his soul!
Should the best and holiest man on earth have but his secret sins every
day written on his forehead, it would not only make him blush, but it
would make him pull his hat over his eyes, or cover his face with a
double scarf.

Sin is the greatest plague in the world, but never more dangerous when
it reaches the heart. Secret sins commonly lie nearest the hear, the
fount from where that take a quick, immediate, and continual supply . .
. And as every secret sin lies nearest the heart, so every secret sin is
the PLAGUE of the heart.

And as all Christians have their secret sins, so all Christians have
their secret temptations. And as they have their secret temptations, so
they have their secret needs; yea often they have such particular and
personal needs that there is not one in the congregation, nor one in the
family, that has the same. And as they have their secret needs, so they
have their secret fears, and secret snares, and secret trials, and
secret troubles, and secret doubts, and secret jealousies! And how do
all these things call aloud upon every Christian to be frequent and
constant in secret prayer!" -- The Secret Key to Heaven by Puritan
Thomas Brooks

Is there a secret sin in your life? Confess it to the Lord and live in
freedom! Taking care of secret sin will have a profound impact upon your
prayer life.

Good words for your consideration.

SATAN HATES WHEN I PRAY

SATAN HATES WHEN I PRAY

I keep asking myself the question, why is praying such hard work?
Shouldn't it be easier than it is?

I have been working through a book written by Puritan Pastor Thomas
Brooks, who served in England during the Civil War. The book is
entitled: THE SECRET KEY TO HEAVEN - The Vital Importance of Private
Prayer published by The Banner of Truth Trust.

Brooks writes that one of the enemies of prayer is the enemy himself,
Satan. Listen to these powerful words:

Secret prayer is a scourge, a hell to Satan. Every secret prayer adds to
the devil's torment, and every secret sigh adds to his torment, and
every secret groan adds to his torment, and every secret tear adds to
his torment.

When a child of God is on his knees in his secret addresses to God, oh,
the strange thoughts, the earthly thoughts, the distracted thoughts, the
hideous thoughts, the blasphemous thoughts, that Satan often injects
into his soul! And all to wean him from secret prayer. Sometimes he
tells the soul, that it is vain to seek God in secret; and at other
times he tells the soul it is too late to seek God in secret; and at
other times he tells the soul it is too late to seek God in secret; for
the door of mercy is shut, and there is no hope, no help for the soul.

Sometimes he tells the soul that it is enough to seek God in public; and
at other times he tells the soul, that it is but a precise trick to seek
the Lord in private. Sometimes he tells the soul, that it is not elected
and therefore all his secret prayer will be rejected; and at other times
he tells the soul, that it is sealed up until the day of wrath, and
therefore a secret prayer can never reverse that seal; and all this to
dishearten and discourage a poor Christian in his secret [prayer times].

Sometimes Satan will bring before a poor Christian the greatness of his
sins; and at other times he will bring before a Christian the greatness
of his unworthiness. Sometimes he will bring before a Christian his lack
of grace; and at other times he will bring before a Christian his lack
of gifts to manage such a duty as it should be managed. Sometimes he
will bring up past difficulties [defeats] in secret prayer; and at other
times he will bring before a Christian his weak desire for secret
prayer; and all to work the soul out of love with secret prayer, yes, to
work the soul to loathe secret prayer; so deadly an enemy is Satan to
secret prayer ...

If there were not a kind of omnipotency in it, if it were not able to do
wonders in heaven, and wonders on earth, and wonders in the hearts and
lives and ways of men, Satan would never have such an aching tooth
against it as he has . . .

The more glory God has from any service we do, the more Satan will
strive by all his wiles, and sleights to take us, either off from that
service, or so to interrupt us in that service, that God may have no
honor, nor we no good, nor himself no hurt, by our prayer [prayer
times]."

The bottom line is this - the enemy doesn't like it when we prayer. He
knows that God HEARS and ANSWERS prayer. So be encouraged, when you
don't feel like praying, press on, press in and PUSH - Push Until
Something Happens.

WHAT PRICE FREEDOM

WHAT PRICE FREEDOM

Philadelphia! 1776! Fifty-six men met together and signed a new document. That parchment was to stand forever as a partnership between the living and the dead, and the yet unborn. We call it the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.

There is a price tag on liberty. You will recall the last paragraph of the Declaration of Independence states: "We must mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, our sacred honor." The fifty-six signatures on the Declaration of Independence were kept secret for one half year because the gallant fifty-six who made that promise knew when they signed that they were risking EVERYTHING! If they won the fight, the best they could expect would be years of hardship in a struggling new nation. And if they lost ... they'd face a hangman's noose as traitors.

Now these were men of well means, well educated. Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants; nine were farmers and owners of large plantations. But they signed the pledge and they did indeed pay the price.

In the Pennsylvania state house, now called Independence Hall, the best men from each of our colonies sat down together. On June 11th, a committee was formed to draw up a Declaration of Independence. We were going to tell our British fatherland, "no more rule by redcoats."

Thomas Jefferson finished the draft of that declaration in seventeen days. Congress adopted it on July 4, 1776. That much is familiar history.

Now here is the documented fate of the heroic fifty-six who signed the Declaration of Independence:

Of the fifty-six few were long to survive. Five were captured by the British and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes looted or destroyed by the enemy. Nine of the fifty-six died in the war from its hardships and bullets. Wealthy planter and trader Carter Braxton of Virginia saw his ships swept from the sea in battle. To pay his debts he sold his home and all his properties. He died in rags.

Thomas McKean of Delaware was so harassed by the enemy that he was forced to move his family five times in five months. He served in Congress without pay, his family in poverty and hiding.

Thomas Nelson Jr. raised two million dollars on his own signature to provision our allies, the French Fleet. After the war he wiped out his entire estate paying back the loans. He was never reimbursed by the government. He died bankrupt and was buried in an unmarked grace. Thomas Nelson Jr. pledged his life, his fortune, his sacred honor.

John Hart was driven from his dying wife's bedside. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves and returned home after the war to find his wife dead, his children gone and his property worthless. He died a few weeks later of exhaustion and a broken heart.

John Hancock, one of the wealthiest men in New England, stood outside Boston one terrible night of the war and said, "Burn, Boston, burn! Though it makes John Hancock a beggar, burn!" He too lived up to the pledge.

I don't know what impression you had on the men who met that hot summer night in Philadelphia, but I think it's important that we remember this about them: They were not poor men or wild-eyed pirates. They were basically rich men who enjoyed ease and luxury in their personal living. They were not hungry men - they were wealthy and prosperous. But they considered LIBERTY so much more important than security that they pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. They fulfilled the pledge ... they paid the price ... and freedom was born!

THE GREATEST SOURCE OF POWER

THE GREATEST SOURCE OF POWER

I appreciated so much the study that Pastor Strain did for us in June from the Book of Proverbs. Proverbs is one of those books that speaks to my heart daily as I continue the discipline of reading a chapter a day. If you haven't taken the challenge to do so, I want to encourage you on day 3 of the month of July -- start reading a chapter a day and allow the Spirit of God to build character into your life.

I want to share with you some devotionals on prayer that have touched my heart during the month of June. God longs to have you and me come to him in prayer. It is one of the easiest things to do, yet one of the hardest of the disciplines.

This morning I share some thoughts from Oswald Chambers, June 7th, from MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST.

"Whatever you ask in MY name, that I will do . . ." (John 14:13)

This reading is riddled with questions that will help us look at our prayer life. Good questions to think through on this 3rd day of July:

"Am I fulfilling this ministry of intercession deep within the hidden recesses of my life? There is no trap nor any danger at all of being deceived or of showing pride in true intercession. It is a hidden ministry that brings forth fruit through which the Father is glorified.
Am I allowing my spiritual life to waste away, or am I focused bringing EVERYTHING to one central point -- the atonement of my Lord?
Is Jesus Christ more and more dominating every interest of my life? If the central point, or the most powerful influence, of my life is the atonement of the Lord, then every aspect of my life will bear more fruit for Him. I must take the time to realize what the central point of power is.

Am I willing to give one minute out of every hour to concentrate on it? "If you abide in Me ..." -- that is, if you continue to act, and think, and work from that central point -- "you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you" (John 15:7).

Ask your selves these questions:
Am I abiding?
Am I taking the time to abide?
What is the greatest source of power in your life? Is it my work, service, and sacrifice for others, or is it my striving to work FOR God? It should be none of these -- what ought to exert the greatest power in my life is the atonement of the Lord. It is not on WHAT we spend the greatest amount of time that molds us the most, but whatever exerts the most power OVER us. We must make a determination to limit and concentrate our DESIRES and INTERESTS on the atonement of the Cross of Christ . . .

"Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do . . ." The disciple who abides in Jesus is the will of God, and what appears to be his free choices are actually God's foreordained decrees. Is this mysterious? Does it appear to contradict sound logic or seem totally absurd? Yes, but what a glorious truth it is to a saint of God."

Good thought and questions for us to ponder throughout the day.

WHEN WISDOM ENTERS YOUR HEART

WHEN WISDOM ENTERS YOUR HEART

I trust you have enjoyed Pastor John Strain's journey into Proverbs during the month of June. I have appreciated his willingness to share his insights from this powerful book.

Do not give your strength to women, nor your ways to that which destroys kings. It is not for kings, O Lemuel, is it not for kings to drink wine, nor for princes intoxicating drink' lest they drink and forget the law, and pervert the justice for all the afflicted. Proverbs 31:3-5

We complete our journey through Proverbs today. I thank Bill Welte for allowing me to share this month of Freedom Fighters. It's been a privilege!

These lines from the last chapter speak to two of the issues that prompted the Freedom Fighter email. The Wisdom Writer tells us that we're not to give our strength to women. Some who fight for freedom fight the battle of sexual addiction. Others in the fight know the power of substance abuse, especially alcoholic beverages. The Proverbs writers come back to these problems one last time.

Those who practice the sexual sins engage in that which destroys kings. If the addiction can destroy a king, what can it do to normal guys like you and me? All of us have read or heard of men who have lost everything to satisfy their sexual addictions. Some have gone to jail. I can't remember the whole saying, but Bill Welte has told us that "sin will always take us farther than we wanted to go." Let's not fool ourselves. Sexual sins are seductive, but they're also destructive.

The writer moves onto strong drink-intoxicating drink. Those who drink strong drink take the risk of forgetting the law and perverting justice. Again, we're not kings. We're ordinary men with all the responsibility that comes with being men. Intoxicating drink will do the same thing to us that it does to kings. We'll forget what's right in the pursuit of what is wrong. We may not pervert justice for the afflicted. Many of us know, however, the suffering and injustice our families experience when we pursue our addictions?

Freedom Fighters accept these instructions. We don't explain them away as though they don't apply to us. We think clearly about the consequences of addictive behavior, and we take every precaution to resist temptation. We build wisdom into our lives.

I pray this thirty-one-day journey through Proverbs will push you to take the trip each month. May God help all of us discover the wisdom that helps us "live life skillfully."

Don't forget: "When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil. . . ."

MODERATION

MODERATION

Two things I request of You (deprive me not before I die): Remove falsehood and lies from me; give me neither poverty no riches-feed me with the food allotted to me; lest I be full and deny you, and say, "Who is the Lord?" Or lest I be poor and steal, and profane the name of my God. Proverbs 30:7-9

These three verses stand alone in chapter 30. They don't connect with anything before or after them. The Wisdom Writer puts them here, and they hit readers like a lightening bolt. As I've said often during the month, Freedom Fighters need this instruction. It helps us discover at least one key to the door of true freedom.

If I understand addictions correctly, they are often a pursuit of the unattainable. There's something more we want, and we keep going farther down the road in pursuit of something. Then we discover that the pursuit has taken over; we're addicted but never satisfied. We always want more, no matter the cost.

These lines tell us how to avoid the "pursuit of more" trap. Let me give you the key in one word: MODERATION. The Wisdom Writer asks God for enough. He doesn't want too much for fear he'll become self-sufficient. He doesn't want too little for fear that he'll bring reproach on God in his pursuit of enough. "God, just give me what I need. Please give me enough." That's his prayer.

This pursuit of moderation mitigates Satan's lie that we always need-that we have a right to-a little more. Every addiction ultimately tells us that we need more of something than we have. So, we eat more, drink more, buy the bigger cable package for more entertainment. Enough is never enough. That's what Satan will have us believe. It's a lie!

God's wisdom-the ability to live life skillfully-at work in our lives will help us discover healthy moderation. We'll know when enough has arrived, and we'll find satisfaction in it. We'll discover freedom from the "pursuit of more."

We also need to see the writer's motivation in his prayer. He doesn't want to deny God or profane God's name. He's not focused on himself. God's reputation is more important. He wants to make God look good! He chooses moderation over too much or too little just to protect his relationship with God.

Freedom Fighters will do well to pray the Wisdom Writer's moderation prayer. Don't forget: Moderation protects our lives and God's reputation. (Pastor John Strain -- First Baptist of Toms River)

TOMORROW: LARRY FORD IN CONCERT at America's KESWICK 3:00 PM. Come meet one of Southern Gospel's finest tenors.
