Redemption Choruses

REDEMPTION CHORUSES
“Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy.”  (Psalm 107:2)

Here is truly a song of victory.  It is a clarion call for the redeemed of the Lord “to say so” and to proclaim God’s wonderful mercy in making us trophies of His grace.  Four different redemption scenarios portray the evidence of such mercy, all concluding with the grateful refrain: “Oh, that man would praise the Lord for His goodness and for His wondrous works to the children of men”.

To the solitary (vv. 4-9) who wanders alone in the wilderness of life, does this grace wonderfully reach. Finding nothing of lasting nourishment but crying out to the Lord, they find the deep soul satisfaction that they have been looking for all along.

To the stubborn person (vv. 10-16) who foolishly despises the counsel of God so that his heart is brought down beyond help and hope, does God also mercifully intervene upon request, rescuing the trusting soul from darkness and the shadow of death.

To the sick, (vv. 17-21) this mercy also comes.  Brought to the point of death because of their iniquity and foolish choices, they are saved out of their distress because He sends His word and heals them.

And to the storm-tossed (vv. 22-32) who “go down to the sea in ships” to see the works of the Lord and acknowledge His “works in the deep,” does this mercy also come as they feel the plight of the human condition, mercilessly subject to storms and fears of life, but who in the midst of their trials, cry out to the Lord for help and see Him calm the waves, bringing them to their desired haven.  Such is the case with multitudes through time—and with you and me—who were willing to part with their foolishness and turn to the Lord in our need.  No wonder the psalmist says—“Let the redeemed of the Lord say so!”   Mark Kolchin is a teaching elder at Bethany Bible Chapel and serves on the Board of Trustees of America’s Keswick

Compass Pointers: No literature is more realistic and honest in facing harsh facts of life than the Bible. At no time is there the faintest suggestion that the life of faith exempts us from difficulties. What is promised is preservation from all the evil in them. All the water in the oceans cannot sink a ship unless it gets inside. Nor can all the trouble in the world harm us unless it gets within us. That is the promise of Psalms 121. The Lord will keep you from all evil. Eugene Peterson
